Burnaby Selects

July 2013

Congrats Burnaby Selects U14 Boys!
The Burnaby Selects U14 team won the Provincial A Championship - their second Provincial Championship soccer title.
The U14 team upended the Kamloops Blaze club 7-0 in the provincial final held July 7th in Langley.
"It was a wonderful game, amazing energy and effort" said Coach Franco Iuele. “The team's philosophy was simple, to dominate possession and to keep the ball, as this allowed us to keep good shape and to create spaces in which to penetrate the opposition”. Coach Mario Montagliani reaffirmed the success ,”..Our defending was impeccable by virtue of the players' dedication to retrieving the ball quickly and to take away the other team’s space. It was a dominating performance in every position, starting with our keeper”.
Alan Camacho Soto tallied four goals in the provincial final win over the Blaze. Tak Tasaka had two goals, and Mathew Manetta scored the seventh and final goal for Burnaby. Throughout the tournament, Mario Greco Jr. and Gurinder Nijjer were amazing sparks in each game played, taking every opportunity to redirect momentum in the team's favor.
Burnaby keeper Aleksandar Kalajdzic, against whom only two goals were scored during the entire tournament, posted a shutout in the Selects'  first game against Coquitlam Metro Ford, and the final game’s 7-0 win over Kamloops.
Matteo Iuele and Matteo Montagliani contributed significantly at midfield throughout each of the four tournament games, in forward and defensive positions. Solid in defence were Cristiano Basso, Anthony Prpic, Kolby Buljevic, Isaac Perkins, and Devon Sandhu, holding an impermeable Burnaby back line. and also contributing in attack. Nicolas Sanchez  and Rory Anjos  were significant contributors to the overall tournament. It was a synchronized team effort throughout each game played.
In regular season play, the team won the u-14A division. This is the second league championship in 2 years for this team and the closest one yet, beating Surrey CCB Pegasus by one point.
In May, the team lost the Coastal A Cup semi-final match on penalty kicks to Richmond United, but just as they did last year – our boys came back and got the Gold.

Burnaby Selects Youth Soccer Club and Sapperton Rovers Mens Club Announce Association of Forces
Burnaby Selects represents the top youth players in Burnaby and New Westminster aged 13 to 18. Royal City Youth Soccer Club recently joined Burnaby District for youth soccer and will be part of the Selects and its best players will invited to the Selects. Sapperton Rovers are the 2006 BC provincial champions with teams in the U21, Mens Premier Open and Masters divisions of the Vancouver Metro Soccer League. Djiba Camara, who is a FIFA player agent will coach the U21 team with assistance from John Penman. Burnaby Select players will get opportunities on the U21 team and the best players will either be helped with professional overseas spots through Djiba Camara or will be invited to the Sapperton Rovers Mens Premier team. “This will create a low cost development pathway for Burnaby and New Westminster youth. We have heard from a lot of parents that some of the other programs are too expensive so they are looking for an alternative”, said John Penman, of the Selects. “The key is to keep our upper level youth program at a reasonable cost for those parents and players.” “A great feeder system like that offered by Burnaby Selects can only help us win another provincial championship” said Rovers President Bryan Wevers. “The addition of Djiba Camara, one of only two FIFA approved agents in BC is bound to keep the best players with the Burnaby Selects and move many of them to the Rovers.” “This is the first step” and “The next step is for both organizations to do the paperwork to make this into a permanent solution. After that we would like to have the same arrangement on the girl’s side.” For more information contact Bryan Wevers at 604-618-1783 or Frank Palmieri at 604-817-3845

2010 Super-Y League North American Finals
Tampa Bay, Florida will once again serve as host city to the Super-Y League North American Finals. The tournament is scheduled for November 19 – 23, 2010 featuring some of the best U13 to U17 players in North America. The Burnaby Selects are very proud to have the following players participate in this prestigious event with Mountain FC:

MTN FC U14 Boys
Parker Ellis
Thomas Tassone
Jeffrey Ramen
Niko Sulentic
Daniel Pervan
KD Konneh
Alex Chima

MTN FC U16 Boys
Jayson Santiago
Gilbert Kyne
Jordan Lashar
Lucas Sweda
Jordan Campbell
Karl Bhandal
Danny Chahal
Miguel Bustamante
Lucas Reis
Paris Gee
Gi Ha
Tanner Wright

The U14 Boys have been grouped with the New Jersey Stallions, Ottawa Fury and the Wellington Wave from Florida. Much will be asked of the boys to win this group as New Jersey are champions of the Mid Atlantic and Wellington were winners of the Southeast Conference. To add to the intrigue, a match up with the Ottawa Fury will provide an all-Canadian contest. Some of the boys are returning to Florida having competed as U13’s a year ago. This will serve the team well going forward.

The U16 Boys are grouped with the Rage Soccer Club from Pennsylvania, the North Virginia Royals and the Schulz Academy from Boca Raton, Florida. The Royals will be strong as South Atlantic Conference champions while the Rage SC emerges from the very competitive Mid Atlantic Conference. Schulz Academy presents a familiar opponent as they will look to avenge a loss to this same Mountain FC team one year ago. Many from the Mountain FC team are returning after a tremendous Finals last year. Unfortunately, their tournament ended in a penalty shootout in the Final. While finishing silver medalists was a great accomplishment, this group is determined to reach for the gold this year. Good luck boys!

BMSSC Banquet & Awards
The BMSSC Banquest was held April 27th at Lochdale Hall.  This year's theme was "Soccer & Education".  Attendees were treated to a delicious dinner and awards ceremony. Many thanks to Christina Leonard and her able assistants for organizing such a successful event.  Thanks also to the sponsors for the terrific door prizes, and donation of flowers for the tables. Bill Stefanek, Registrar and founding club member, addressed the concept of  "Success".  According to Bill "What is a successful season? Well a successful season, from a board members perspective is a season where we take a 100 boys, keep them off the streets and out of trouble. Keep them physically active, in good shape, and be team players. I know we have accomplished this every year of our existence. A successful season is also one where Burnaby's best soccer players accomplish goals. These goals should be to improve their play, and with the great coaching we have, it is nearly impossible to not have accomplished that goal." Bill went on to stress the many successes graduating club members have had in post-secondary institutions, and particularly in gaining scholarships to assist them in their studies and careers.
Two recent graduates from the BMSSC Club, Nour Fathy and Colin Streckman, addressed the current team members.

Colin Streckman joined the club at UI4 and spent his entire time with the Burnaby Royals. Colin graduated from youth soccer in 2006. He is currently attending SFU, playing on the men's soccer team and is majoring in Kinesiology.

Nour Fathy also joined the club at UI4, and graduated on the UI8 Spartans team. Nour is currently enrolled at Langara College and is a member of the men's soccer team. Nour is studying business at Langara, and spends his free time as an assistant coach for the UI4 Mountain FC team.

Both young men stressed how important and memorable their team mates and the opportunities provided through BMSCC were in shaping their current successes.

For some boys, this was their first appearance at the Super Y North American Finals, while for others was a return engagement.  This was Logan Fales' first year with the Whitecaps SuperY team, and he was very pleased to be selected as an underage player with the U16 Super Y team.

Nicolas Koffas was also in his first Super Y year, and made an outstanding contribution to that team with 7 points from 3 goals and 1 assist.  Massimo Pannozzo was a member of the U14 IPL team, and during his season with the Super Ys, gained three points for his team as a defender.  Pannozzo and Fales have played with Burnaby Selects since U14.  Colin Soo, midfielder, had four points during regular season play with the Super Ys with one goal and two assists.

For Said Bedouhene, a key member of the U17 Whitecaps midfield, this iwas his second trip to the finals. Bedouhene is very skillful, and one of the team's top point getters, finishing the regular season with an amazing 6 goals and 7 assists for a total of 19 points.  Scott Stefanek, defender, has played for the Whitecaps on the U14, U15, U16 and U17 teams. The 2005 Whitecaps U16 team finished third in North America, and both Stefanek  & Ricky Teixiera were on that team. Stefanek and Teixiera graduated from the Youth program this Spring, and now play for the Capilano College soccer team.

Goalkeeping is a Burnaby Selects strong suit, as two of the 'Caps teams relied on the 'keeper skills of our boys. Michael Minosky, in his third year with the 'Caps, minds the nets for the U15 team. Last year's performance, saw his Super Y team winning the North American Y League Championships. Nour Fathy stops shots for the U16s, and also returned to the North American Championships for the second time.

The Burnaby Metro Selects Soccer Club is extremely proud of all these players.  Read more about all the competitors in the USL Super Y League Finals at the United Soccer League's web page.
